Holy Joe was a band I started with my good friend Billy Valentine. We met in a San Francisco NA meeting in the early 1990’s, before 4 Non Blondes hit it big. I went on tour for several years but we kept in touch and it was during that time I bought him his first guitar. A few years passed post-4NB and Billy wanted me to hear a band he had started called “Deep Dark Heavy”. I loved his songs but thought they were being butchered by his band – although I did like the guitar player, except for his gear was crap. Billy asked me if I would consider playing with him or at least helping him get his band on track. I joined, fired the bass player and drummer and brought my friend Claudia Paige in to play drums. I bought an amp for the guitarist to play through, and eventually bought him a guitar, too.
Billy wrote some of my favorite songs, and he cranked them out daily. For someone who had barely performed live, he was damn good at it. He also wrote short stories and poetry. His lyrics are the beating heart of every song. All of his songs are stories, and all of his stories are true. After a few years of clean time, he started using again and the band broke up as a result. We stayed in touch for a while, but as his drug use progressed he would disappear for years at a time. Billy passed away in 2014 from a blood infection, the result of decades of IV drug use and HIV.
